Last Monday, October 24, we launched a new edition of Cyberlunes Colombia. The sustained growth of electronic commerce in the last two years in this country generates positive projections for the great discount event organized by the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce.
The pandemic is over, but the electronic commerce is here to stay in Colombia and online sales continue to rise. According to data from the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CCCE), “in the first half of 2022, COP 25.8 trillion have been sold through electronic commerce, 27.7% more than the first half of 2021”.
What causes explain this phenomenon?
One of the factors that has undoubtedly contributed to the promotion of ecommerce in Colombia is the change in the consumption habits of Colombians since the pandemic in 2020. Since that year, marked by restrictions and confinement, and during 2021/2022, Colombian consumers have become familiar with and have appropriated the digital channel to carry out their daily transactions, besides the reopening of physical stores.
Another determining factor in the explosion of digital commerce are discount events, such as Cyberlunes. These sales campaigns to promote consumption have fueled the sustained growth of industry indicators. On the day of the first Cyberlunes of 2022, which took place in the first days of April, there were a total of 707,664 new users, exceeding 1,400,000 total visits to the event site. This trend tells us about the greater confidence that the Colombian consumer places in purchases through digital media.
The growth figures speak for themselves and allow us to speak of an online commerce boom. In the Electronic Commerce Behavior Report in Colombia during the second quarter of 2022, the CCCE points out that “total online sales in the second quarter of 2022 reached COP 13.6 trillion, a variation of 11.4% compared to what was observed in the first quarter of 2022 and an increase of 53.3% compared to the second quarter of 2021”. Another relevant fact that deserves to be highlighted shows that “the total number of online sales transactions, including retail and service sales, in the second quarter of 2022 was approximately 82.7 million, which means an increase of 26, 6% compared to the second quarter of 2021 and 86.7% compared to the same quarter of 2020”.
Currently, about 6 million people in Colombia buy online, according to the latest measurement by ENTIC (Survey of Information and Communication Technologies in Households by the National Administrative Department of Statistics). By the end of 2022, the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CCCE) estimates a 13% growth in online sales compared to what was observed in 2021, the year in which COP 39.7 trillion were sold by electronic commerce.
At ID4You we are proud to work on the strategies, design and developments that are driving the growth of electronic commerce in Colombia, as well as at the regional level.
